Transatlantic Mail to Italy

1847 (Jul. 23) New Orleans, La. to Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia, folded letter from the Sardinia Consul in New Orleans to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sardinia, blue "New Orleans La. Jul 24" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rating h.s., since a contract mail steamer had just left for Liverpool from Boston (1 August 1847), the New York postmaster put letter on a sailing packet to Liverpool, carried by Black Ball Line Isaac Wright from New York Aug. 2 to Liverpool arriving Aug. 30, Very Fine, Only one other letter in this correspondence has been recorded that was sent by sailing ship to England.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

London marked letter "Detained for Postage" and the amount to be paid before the letter would be forwarded beyond England, 1s11d (8d incoming ship fee plus 1s3d for a ½ oz. letter to be sent through France to the Sardinian border). Rate to Sardinia through France from London was 5d British transit and 10d French transit fees. No postage due was required since letter sent to government official.
