Transatlantic Mail to and from Austria

1862 (Aug. 17) Reute, Austria to Boston, Mass., cover with "Reute, 17 Aug" two-line postmark, "Aachen 5 Cts 20/8" cds debit to U.S., carried by Allan Line North American from Londonderry Aug. 22 to Quebec arriving Sep. 3, "Boston Am. Pkt. '30' Sep 1" debit exchange cds, F.-V.F., This is the discovery copy of the "BOSTON. AM.PKT. 30" circular datestamp, not recorded in Blake & Davis.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

In the summer months, mails for the U.S. were put ashore from the Allan Line steamer at Rivière du Loup on the St. Lawrence River, about 110 miles before arriving at Quebec. From here the mails went by train to Portland and Boston. The year was determined by the sailing dates and the break in the rim of the Aachen cds.
