Confederacy, Mobile, Ala., 1861, 5¢ blue (affixed upside down with large margins to just barely touching at lower left) tied by the Mobile, Ala./Oct. 12, 1861 double circle postmark on cover addressed to Miss Lewis Care of Maj Gen Jno L. Lewis, New Orleans, La., endorsed at left in the same handwriting as the address "Lieut A. J. Lewis La Infy.", cover reduced at the left and shows just a little overall light foxing, otherwise Very Fine.

John L. Lewis was not a regular CSA General Officer. At the start of the war, he was in command of a division of Louisiana State Troops (militia). The sender was his son who at this time was a Lieut in Co D 1st La Inf. This unit had been sent to reinforce the defenses at Pensacola, Fla.
