1849 New York, N.Y. To Cognac, France. Folded letter with pencil "24" rate per half ounce applied in New York, "18" decimes due the addressee in France (10 decimes due G.B., 8 decimes for 7.5 grams over 400 kilometers), Very Fine, according to R. Winter Understanding Transatlantic Mail, Vol. 1 very little mail for France was carried by the Ocean Line steamer during the first few years of their operations.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Sent via Ocean Line - per steamer Hermann, departing New York on April 20th and arriving in Southampton on May 4th.
