Full sharp strike of red integral rate cds (Williams SAF-290) on folded letter to Taunton, Mass., letter datelined "San Francisco 30th May, 1850" with interesting content…I am now in command of the steamer Major Tompkins on the Sacramento river…We make our first trip tomorrow, Extremely Fine and choice, the earliest known usage of this San Francisco integral rate postmark, pictured in Wiltsee Gold Rush Steamers of the Pacific (pg. 380). Estimate $300 - 400.
Sent via P.M.S.C. - Oregon departing San Francisco on June 1st and arriving in Panama on June 21st, then by U.S.M.S.C. - Georgia departing Chagres on June 26th and arriving in New York on July 8th.
