Portugal, 1928 15c Olympic Postal Tax Stamp. Tied by "Ambulancias/Avenica - Gare/24 Mai '28" double circle postmark in combination with Ceres 10c pair + 4oc on cover to Porto, Extremely Fine and rare. Scott No. RA14 Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.
This stamp was issued for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. The use of this stamp, in addition to regular postage was obligatory. It was valid for only three days (May 22-24, 1928). Of the monies thus obtained, 10% was retained by the Post Office and the balance was to the Portuguese Olympic Committee in support of the participating athletes at the Amsterdam Games.
Despite being relatively common as a used stamp off cover, it is very difficult to find on cover.
