Lot 1899
Great Britain, 1826 One Guinea Note Forgery. Extraordinary forgery of Royal Bank of Scotland one Guinea note, on watermarked paper, with handwritten numbers and signed by hand, in the condition as specifically created to deceive the Treasury. It subsequently was endorsed "forged" six times on the reverse and accompanied by an 1831 entire letter from the Custom House in Grangemouth to the Cashier at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh with a note that it was accepted by the First Clerk (who has also signed on the reverse of the note) in good faith, and asks/pleads that the bank issue a genuine note in its place! The application was apparently not successful. The crime of banknote forgery could carry the punishment of execution, transportation, or amputation, but that it was also common for banks to honor forgeries innocently accepted, so as to maintain confidence in paper money; yet not in this instance; some edge wear, still remarkable example, ex. Robson Lowe (Not part of the Kane Collection).Estimate $500 - 750.
