U. S. Coins - 1859-1884 Indian Head Cents

Lot 2583

Peerless 1864-L Indian Head Cent. Bronze, Repunched Date Cent Snow-1, FS-2301. Snow-1, FS-2301 (formerly FS-006.7). In the Cherrypicker's Guide, Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton rate this variety as URS-6, meaning that they believe only 17 to 32 examples are known. Compare that survival to the 1873 Closed 3 Doubled Die, Snow-1, with an estimated survival of 126 to 250 pieces, or the 1888/7 Snow-1 Overdate, with a survival estimated at 33 to 64 coins.

This variety has a dramatic doubled date that may actually be a tripled date. With its listing on the PCGS Set Registry, it is especially important for specialists. Consider also that PCGS has only certified two coins identified as Snow-1 or FS-2301, and the other piece grades XF40! The present Choice Mint State example is mostly red with some mellow brown toning. It is an exceptional example that deserves spirited bidding competition as it has no peers, PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized: $850
