Hawaii, 1857, 5¢ blue, thin white paper. Ample to large margins, uncancelled on folded letter datelined "Hilo, Hawaiian Islands, Aug. 8, 1858" from J. Metcalf to his nephew Frank Sawyer in Norwalk O., red "Honolulu, Hawaiian - Islands, Sep. 15" cds and "San Francisco, Cal., 12, Oct. 5, 1858" integral rate cds indicating 12¢ due (10¢ postage plus 2¢ ship captain's fee), additional manuscript pointing hand and "Due" applied by post office for clarification (presumably at Norwalk), enclosure with writer informing his nephew…I am now carrying out the last enterprise probably of my life starting a sugar plantation…I shall come home in the fall of 1860, just in time to cast my vote for Fremont. I hope you will not challenge it. I shall be only 19 years from home then., Very Fine, a rare 5¢ Kamehameha III second printing usage, posted at Hilo in early August 1858 but not postmarked at Honolulu until September 15th, Ex Rust, Pietsch.
