Cds and matching "10" rate handstamp on 1847 folded letter to Lynn, Mass., letter datelined "Veracruz Mar 31, 1847" written by soldier a couple days after the Seige of Veracruz during the Mexican-American War…which has so lately terminated in the entire defeat of the Mexicannnas…we where under the Enemys Guns from the beginning to the end of the siege…they commenced a heavy cononade on us the night we landed and kept it up day and night without intermission till the night before their surrender…I saw them march out of the city and stack their arms upon the plains…on the Twenty ninth and they were a dam sorry looking set I assure you. The City is knocked into a cocked Hat, and is riddled like a sive…The Citizens of Alvarado, the Place which the renowned Conner has tried so often to take, sent a delegation of their Citizens offering a surrender of the Place to Gen Scot, other comment regarding Gen. Taylor, yellow fever and moving on Mexico City, Very Fine.Estimate $100 - 150.
