Middleburg, located on a tributary of the St. Johns River in Duval County, was an important stop and exchange point on mail routes at the time. In 1853 and 1854, there when empidemics of scarlet fever and small pox. The founding of the Duval County Medical Society in 1853, in the midst of widespread concern over recurring epidemics, marked in beginning of organized medicine in Florida.
