Singapore to United States via England, 1858. Neat envelope with Singapore 13 May 1858 cds on reverse and on address panel, manuscript notation "From the U.S. Ship "Portsmouth" Singapore E.I." Debited "18" cents for 12 cent British rate and 6 cent French transit (via Marseilles route). Postmarked New York exactly two months after mailing, handstamped "39" cents to be collected, including 21 cents retained by the U.S. for transatlantic sea postage and U.S. internal carriage. 39 cents was the treaty rate for under ¼ ounce; tone spot in bottom left corner, otherwise Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300.
