Galway Line?s "Propeller" Only Voyage, Galway August 21st - Boston September 3rd 1858. Entire dated "St. Johns Newfoundland 30th August 1858" addressed Boston and therefore carried on the final leg of the Propeller?s voyage to Boston. Prepaid the 4d Sterling rate and on arrival at Boston received the "BOSTON BR PKT / 5 Cts / 3 / SEP" stamp. The Galway Line commenced operations in June 1858 providing a service between Galway, Ireland and New York via Halifax or St. Johns.
The Company was negotiating a contract to carry the Newfoundland mails monthly and to test their capability made a trial run from Galway via St. Johns to Boston. The steamship Propeller was chartered but on the vessels return it was found to be in a "sinking condition" and the Boston service was abandoned until July 1860.
