Feldman Collection of Atlantic Mails - Cunard and the Retaliatory Rate

Mail Boat "A92" used on Cunard?s "Arabia", Liverpool January 23rd - Boston February 6th 1864. Envelope originating in London where the paid datestamp was applied but the strip of six of G.B. 1856-63, 1d rose red, Plate 27 adhesives were not cancelled, although an inspectors mark was applied. Sorted on the Arabia where the "A92" obliterator was applied and the letter bagged for Chicago. At Chicago, in absence of that exchange office having a "CHICAGO BR. PKT." arrival stamp (none recorded by Piszkiewicz), a "CHICAGO AM. PK. 24 / FEB / 7" was used. A previously unrecorded "35 / U.S. NOTES" depreciated currency stamp was also applied at Chicago. The partial 6d. payment in Sterling was disallowed. Addressed to Litchfield, Illinois and redirected to Bloomingfield without further charge; cover soiling and missing backflap, stamp flaws, Fine; with 1980 R.P.S. certificate. SG No. BS16.
