Feldman Collection of Atlantic Mails - Cunard and the Retaliatory Rate

Cunard Line "Arabia" to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Entire dated "New York Decr. 22nd 1862" addressed to Ragged Island situated 126 miles by road south west of Halifax. The addressee, Mess. J. & E. Locke were the founders of the town of Lockport. Put onto the Arabia on the 24th December 1862 prepaid the 10 cent cross border rate by 1861, 10¢ green. Put off at Halifax on the 26th and delivered 30th December with a local charge of 8 cents., Very Fine.

The Cunard Line contracted to carry mails between Nova Scotia, Britain and the USA calling once a month at Halifax en route between Liverpool and Boston.Mails to Nova Scotia were sent to Boston to await the next sailing calling at Halifax. Correspondents were well aware of the sailing dates and sent their letters in time for the boats at Boston.
