Transatlantic Mail via Cork to the United States 1862, Prepaid by Stamp. 1862, 1sh green on letter from Scotland to Massachusetts, endorsed "via Cork to New York", red New York Br. Pkt. Arrival cds. From late 1859, Cunard steamers called at Cork (also called Queenstown), Ireland, after leaving Liverpool. Thus late mail carried by train and Irish Sea ferry could still catch the steamer before it sailed for America. This letter caught the Arabia, which left Queenstown January 5 and reached New York January 20, 1862; light cover toning and file fold affecting stamp, Fine.Scott No. 42 Estimate $200 - 300.
