Feldman Collection of Atlantic Mails - Cunard and the Retaliatory Rate

Cunard Mails to Ireland Sorted at Dublin. Two covers; "Asia", New York - Liverpool 15th - 28th April 1857, Entire dated "Jersey City Post Office, April 13th 1857" and prepaid 24 Cents in cash. "19" Cents stamp as credit to Britain applied at New York. On arrival at Dublin the "AMERICA DUBLIN / PAID / AP 28 / 1857" similar to Tabeart P1 but 28 mm diameter not previously recorded. Atlantic transit of 13 days

"Africa", New York - Liverpool 11th - 23rd May 1859, Envelope prepaid 24 Cents in cash at New York with the "19" Cents credit to Britain stamp applied. At Dublin the "AMERICA DUBLIN / PAID / MY 24 / 1859" was applied prior to sorting. Atlantic transit of 11 days; minor edge wear, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Until November 1859 Cunard vessels went directly to Liverpool. It was usual to sort the mails at Liverpool before the Irish mails were forwarded. When the vessels arrived late the Irish mails were put directly on the packet to Dublin to be sorted there.
