Pioneer Steamship President, New York - Liverpool November 11 - 27, 1840. Folded letter to Paris carried on the second (and last completed) voyage of this ship which was lost without a trace on her third eastbound sailing. As only Cunard had a mail contract, the letter was privately carried to Liverpool where it was posted "Paid to the Frontier", routed via London and Calais to Paris, where it was rated "10" decimes to be collected, Extremely Fine.Estimate $500 - 750.
The President was a vessel of the British & American Steam Navigation Company, which also owned the Sirius and the British Queen.
