S.S. Liverpool, New York - Liverpool - Glasgow 14th December 1839 - 12th January 1840. Entire headlined "New York, 14 Dec 1839" addressed to Glasgow arriving on the 13th January. The sender endorsed the letter "Liverpool" and on arrival at the port of Liverpool a charge of 1 Shilling 4 Pence was applied in manuscript. This charge was applied only 8 days after the introduction of the uniform 1d. postage rate and appears to be made up of the 1 Shilling ship letter rate plus a double weight unpaid charge of 4d., Extremely Fine.Estimate $500 - 750.
The Transatlantic Steam Ship Company, a subsidiary of the City of Dublin Steam Ship Company was formed in 1838 and only owned one steamship, the Liverpool. Of 1150 gross tons and built by Humble & Milcrest of Liverpool in 1837 it was the first double stack ship on the Atlantic route. She completed only seven Liverpool to New York trips before the company failed.
