Pioneer Atlantic Steamship "Royal William", Final Voyage. Entire dated "New York 15th Jany 1839" addressed to Sheffield, Yorkshire and endorsed "Single per Royal William". Reverse bears the "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER" type S14 and carried in the By-Post directly to Sheffield without any further transit stamps. Charged 1 Shilling 5 Pence ("1/5") being 8 pence ship letter rate plus 9 pence for 65 to 95 mileage band inland., Very Fine. Estimate $750 - 1,000.
The letter was carried on the third and final Atlantic crossing leaving New York 16th January 1839 and arriving Liverpool 3rd February.
