Falmouth Packet "Carteret" 1793 London-Falmouth-Philadelphia. First rated 2/-, corrected to P 3 for a prepaid triple sheet packet letter. On arrival at New York the manuscript "75" was added where we customarily find the postage due from New York to Philadelphia, the amount seems far too large. If in cents this would be a triple sheet rate for over 450 miles (New York to Philadelphia was only 83 miles). Likewise if it were 75 grains of silver the rate would be 3 dwt 3 gr, more than twice the 1 dwt 8 gr which should have applied. One possibility is that this was the top letter in a stack for the same addressee, and the "75" due includes all of the letters in the stack; slight soiling, Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300.
