Everts & Co.'s Express/Forbestown. Blue oval handstamp with "Connecting With Adams & Co." with "Adams" excised (late use by Everts, Davis & Co. after Adams had failed in 1855) on 1853 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Sacramento, exchanged with "Pacific Express Co. / Marysville Jan 29" blue oval handstamp, "1856" docket, hint of edge wear, part of top backflap missing, F.-V.F., a scarce conjunctive use, with original letter headed "New York Flat Jan 26th /56" from the "Clerk of an Independent Rifle Company at this place" seeking to ascertain the status of a requisition for arms.

New York Flat was a mining camp in Yuba County. This cover is addressed to the Hon. W. C. Burnett who, at the time, was a California State Senator representing Yuba and Sutter Counties. He was also the First Lieutenant (second in command) of the Yuba Guards. The Yuba Guards, Fifth Division, First Brigade of the California Militia was active 1855-1857. The California Militia was organized in 1850 to fight lawlessness and deal with Indian hostilities. The California Militia became the California National Guard in 1866.
