Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue. Large margins, small surface abrasion, tied by bold "Charleston, S.C./Dec. 14" cds on forwarded adversity cover made from printed ledger form, addressed to "Lt. Col.Wilmot G. de Saussure", address crossed out and forwarded back to Charleston with horizontal. pair 1862 5¢ blue, Richmond print (#7, large margins) affixed over 10¢ (#12) & tied by blue "Columbia, S.C./Dec. 24" cds. After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War. He commanded the force of reserves, which engaged in the defense of Charleston, and was appointed Adjutant General of South Carolina.
