U.S. Mail Steamer Teche, E.B. Trinidad, Master. Bold oval handstamp tying 1861 3¢ rose on 1866 cover to New Orleans with manuscript postmark of "New Iberia, La.", part of flap torn away, Very Fine and rare. Milgram No. 1345.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This steamboat was variously named, "Thomas W. Sugg", "C.S.S. Tom Sugg", "U.S.S. Tensas" & "Teche", which operated as a commercial carrier before the war and as both a Confederate and United States armed gunboat. After the war, it was sold to Capt. Trinidad for use as a contract mail carrier.
