U.S. Postal History: L. Persson Colorado Territory - Territorial Covers (R-W)

Lot 192

Valmont Col Dec 5, black cds on 1870 cover to Iowa franked with 1869 3¢ ultramarine tied by target cancel, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine and attractive, an appealing cover from a notoriously colorful town.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

As the town grew, Valmont began efforts to replace Boulder as the county seat, with the Valmont Bulletin newspaper leading the assault. One night in 1867 the press and all of the type of the Bulletin were stolen. In a wonderful coincidence instructive to students of both civic pride and journalistic ethics, the Boulder Valley News began publication only two days later using the exact same typeface. Strangely, Valmont never did become the county seat.

Realized: $130
