British Commonwealth - Hong Kong Treaty Ports

Lot 746

Treaty Ports, 1880 Shanghai to Hong Kong. QV 1c green postal card cancelled bold S1 with adjacent "Shanghae a My 2 80" cds to Rev. Reusch, Basel Mission, Hong Kong, worn "S1", but appears to be Proud type K6 (value: 1,000 points), recorded used 1877-85. Shanghai cds Proud type D7, recorded 26.8.69-25.5.80, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This usage predates Proud's earliest recorded use of this card from Shanghai (10 May 80), and is quite an early use overall, as card was only issued in Feb. 80. Inter-port mail is not common by itself, and Gurevich recorded only one earlier inter-port usage of definitive postal cards after their Feb. 1880 issue.

Realized: $700
