Orange red "Ship - Letter London No 25 1848" cds on small cover with matching Maltese cross "Paid 25 No 25" in the middle, markings include magenta manuscript "8" pence private ship fee & endorsed "by Private Ship" on top, bright red "New-York Ship Jan 28 7cts" cds applied in transit (2¢ ship fee + 5¢ per half ounce under 300 miles U.S. domestic zone rate), backstamped rimless "Ship Letter - Liverpool - No 26 1848" cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The intent of the private ship routing was probably to circumvent the retaliatory rate, saving the writer 4 pence (8 cents U.S) and the recipient 29 cents, which arrived during the restored period.

Realized: $550
