1857 Charleston, S.C. to Paris. Cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair (slightly cut in & left stamp defective) tied by "Charleston, S.C." cds with a red "New - York Br. Pkt Mar 4" exchange cds & boxed "GB 1F 60c" accountancy mark.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The franking paid the correct 5¢ per half ounce British Open Mail letter rate, which paid only the U.S. inland, with the remainder collected in France. This was sent during the three month interval between the implementation of the Anglo-French convention of 1 Jan 1857, and the U.S. - French Postal Convention, which was effective 1 April 1857.
