With forwarding to Switzerland, 1838 folded letter with "Bristol Ship Letter" boxed handstamp and endorsed "Steam Ship Great Western" at lower left, black manuscript "1/5" rate (8d private ship + 9d British inland), manuscript "1/2" (half ounce rate to Switzerland via France), various transit backstamps, F.-V.F., this was the 5th east-bound crossing of the "Great Western", departing New York 23-Nov and arriving Bristol 7-Dec. Since these were posted in New York, there is no evidence freight money fees were collected. Estimate $150 - 200.
