1860, 30¢ orange. Vertical pair tied in combination with 5¢ brown, Ty. II + 12¢ black, Plate 3 by large "Paid" grid cancels on 1860 cover to "Bark Amazonian", Malaga, Spain, postmarked on reverse "Boston Am. Pkt. Aug. 17" cds, sender's manuscript routing "via N. York", manuscript "60" crossed out, red crayon "36/2" credit (double 18¢ credit), red London Paid transit (Aug. 31) and red "PD" in circle handstamp, Malaga receiving backstamp, 5¢ moved slightly from original position (not noted on certificate), one 30¢ sealed tear

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND EXTREMELY RARE 1857-60 ISSUE FRANKING. VERY FEW 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE COVERS ARE KNOWN TO SPAIN.

The Boston "Am. Pkt." backstamp and transit datestamps confirm American Packet service to England on the Havre Line's Arago, departing New York on August 18, 1860, arriving in Southampton on August 30. The 77¢ postage was accepted for the 78¢ British Mail via France rate for a letter weighing between -1/2 ounce and -3/4 ounce. The "36/2" credit applied at Boston is correct for American Packet service.
