Lot 1137

1777, "Genl. Burgoyne, who has surrendered…". Folded letter from Lieut. James McClure of New Hampshire to his wife at Exeter N.H., datelined "Albany Oct. 22, 1777" with opening line "I Have to Congratulate you on the Total Reduction of Genl. Burgoyne, who has Surrendered with His Hole Army & all their arms & is now on his way a Prisoner to Boston -- The Enemy are making a Blustering Shove up the North River, Burning & Destroying all before them, their being so far up the River Has Caused us to make a forced march from Saratoga…", remaining content is personal and family related, dampstained, but the letter is fully readable, a fantastic contemporary reference to Burgoyne's Surrender, a turning point in the American War of Independence, written by one of New Hampshire's patriots.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized: $625
