Sonora, Cal. (Tuolumne). Manuscript postmark (Williams TUO-1330) on 1850 folded letter addressed to "Stand Watie, Esq. Maysville, Benton County, Arkansas" with matching manuscript "40" rate, interesting miner's letter written by his brother, John A. Watie, which tells of the hardships of the overland crossing to California & mining conditions, folded letter somewhat worn at right, F.-V.F. Estimate $500 - 750.
Stand Watie, was born on December 29, 1806, at Oothcaloga, Cherokee Nation, Georgia. He was to become the principal leader of the Cherokee Nation and the only Native American Confederate General during the Civil War. Watie was a proponent of the removal treaty, which ultimately forced the Cherokee out of Georgia in 1838 to Oklahoma along the "Trail of Tears", on which 4000 Cherokee died.
