California Postal History by Town - Napa to Sacramento

Lot 153

Sacramento City, Cal. (Sacramento). Red cds (Williams SAC-2520) on circa 1853 folded letter with matching "10" rate handstamp to Massachusetts, letter datelined "Tolls Diggings, Sunday July 20/5?" miner's letter with fine contents, "I will now give you an outline of our wanderings in Califury (sic), we started from Burns diggings last March and footed it to the North Fork of the Feather, a distance of about 600 miles, we went through snow from 8 to 10 feet deep. But when we got there the Oro had stepped out. We stayed there about 6 weeks till we got about hard up and then started back, and are now camped in Tolls diggings. We have had very hard luck lately but the old saying is, Faint heart never won fair lady, we are bound to stay in the mines until we do make something… I have got a nice specimen for you which I dug myself, it is pure gold and weighs just an Ounce. You may excuse this scribbling for I am not writing very comfortably, just imagine yourself seated on the ground with a wash pan for a writing desk and see how you like it.", Very Fine, pictured in California Gold with letter fully transcribed, ex-Kutz.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Realized: $400
