Way Letter from Sacramento. 1864 3¢ entire addressed to San Francisco, with two strikes of "Way" handstamp, portion of original enclosure datelined "Sacramento, Feb 14th", cover slight reduced at left, Very Fine. Scott No. U58 Estimate $300 - 400.
Way marking is found only on mail carried by private contractors employed to carry the U.S, mail. The receiving post office handstamped "Way" to make sure the 1 cent for the service of the contractor in delivering them to the post office and that this charge was to be collected from addressee. .
