Manuscript free frank with matching "Avon, Me., August, 18th" postmark at left, on 1851 folded letter to husband in Sacramento City, docketed "Received at Sac, Oct 8th, 1851, D. Towle", letter with interesting content regarding Postmaster free franking privilege and the new July 1, 1851 rates; "I rejoice to get letters from you. I received one last Sat. th 9, inst bearing date June 30, with one for Daughter and Son, which made the postage 80cts. If you had mailed them seperate, I could have received free from postage. The new postage law came into effect the first of July…on letters from here to Cal. 6cts, pre pay, 10 not…", Very Fine.
