[New York] 1848 retaliatory rate incoming letter to Utica, N.Y. Datelined July 24, 1848, blue "Birmingham Aug 21, 48" cds, red Boston cds and "29" rate, historically significant letter …I do not doubt for a moment that there are plenty in America who think old John Bull at the end of his tether and with most of them the wish is father to the thoughts…his Constitution is firm & as sound a rock…even the Chartists themselves (poor devils) admit that [their] opportunity is gone by…the boasted meeting of April 10, if even the Government had not prevented it would scarcely have revolutionized Sunbury let alone such a Country as this where everything depends so much upon order & confidence…as to America helping Ireland further than with a few frothy speeches it is quite out of the question…and as for fighting men old --'s parlour would hold more than will ever land in Ireland for the sake of a buffet with John Bull…indeed I suspect that Mexico has quite satisfied the appetite for war of Uncle Sam for a few years at least…if we are to have an insurrection in Ireland [it] will be before a week out…in a bill to suspend the Habeus Corpus…Ireland's bullies will be on guard…I am sorry to tell you that there are alarming reports of the probable failure of the potato crop - if it should be true & of Ireland as well as England - God help the "bogtrotters" for we will not…31st July there will be no revolution in Ireland. Cover tone spots and splitting along some folds, Fine (no photo).Estimate $300 - 400.
