Confederacy, General Hospital #21, Richmond, Va., cover from Asst. Surgeon Josiah L. Brown, 116th Ohio Inf. to his wife, "Mrs. Mary Brown, Green Spring, Ohio", on printed "Sanitary Commission" envelope (manuscript obliterates "Sanitary"), franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65, defective) cancelled with grid and postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Aug 8" double circle at left, manuscript endorsement at left "Prisoners Letter" and pencil censor's initials "JL" (Lt. John Latouche, Adjutant) at right, F.-V.F.

AN OUTSTANDING PRISONER OF WAR COVER OF WHICH THERE ARE ONLY FIVE RECORDED.

Brown must have had stamps in his possession when captured, albeit damaged ones. The stamp on this cover is the mate to the damaged stamp used from the same correspondence from the prison in Winchester.
