Anderson to his wife in Richmond, Va., with "Head Quarters, Department of N.C., Official Business" semi-official imprint with "Official Business" cross out (personal letter); some cover soiling and edge wear at top, F.-V.F. C.S.A. Catalog No. WD-ZA-13.

After the fall of New Berne, N.C. on March 16th, 1862, the Richmond government relieved General Gatlin and placed Gen. Anderson in command of the Department of North Carolina, a position he only held for a few days. This cover was sent the day before he relieved of this temporary command.
