The P & O Company's "Colombo" was wrecked in fog on her way from Point de Galle to Suez on November 19 of 1862, the passengers and animals made their way to shore where they were helped by the natives, an officer was sent to the mainland to signal for help which did not arrive until the 30th, so the passengers and crew had to establish their own community until help arrived.
