The "Baltimore" was stationed off the coast of South America during the 1891 Chilean Civil War and was involved in what became known as "The Baltimore Crisis", a diplomatic incident between Chile and the United States. The crisis was sparked by the stabbing of two U.S. Navy sailors from the "U.S.S. Baltimore" outside the "True Blue Saloon" in Valparaíso on October 16, 1891. In response, the U.S. government demanded an apology. The crisis was resolved when Chile issued an apology and paid a $75,000 indemnity in gold.
