Per U.S. Mail Packet "Atlantic" (Atlantic Ocean), red 2-line handstamp on incoming 1850 transatlantic folded letter from Calcutta, India to Boston, sent Care of Baring Bros., London, with red framed "Calcutta, G.P.O., 2 July 2, 1850" backstamp and matching bold "INDIA" framed handstamp, entered mails with London "LS, 20AU20, 1850" Maltese cross and Liverpool (8.21) transits, numerous markings including sharp "3 Cents" debit handstamp for 3¢ British inland rate, carried by Collins Line Atlantic from Liverpool Aug. 21st to New York arriving Sep. 21st, closed bag to Boston where black "24" rate due handstamp applied, couple light file folds, Very Fine and attractive, Illustrated in Milgram.Milgram No. 76 Estimate $750 - 1,000.

The U.S. Mail Packet "Atlantic" was the first steamer of the American Collins Line. The Boston Daily Journal for Sept. 3, 1850 says, "The Atlantic from Liverpool Aug. 21 reached New York Sept 1 in eleven days, two hours from dock to dock. The foreign mails by the steamer Atlantic, at New York, arrived in Boston Monday evening Sept. 2." .
