1860, 5¢ brown, type II, vertical pair, canceled by neat waffle grid cancels on red and blue Liberty & Flag patriotic cover to Sands O., matching "Marysville, Cal., Sep 22" cds, with original enclosure with matching patriotic letterhead datelined "Marysville, Cal., September 15, 1861" with interesting details of his journey from Ohio to California and the great difficulties encountered in the passage…"It was a tiresome trip I assure you, so tiresome that this one will do me. We left Lancaster, Ohio Apr 11th and got here August 13th one hundred and 22 days on the way…Lost 7 head of horses and one man out of our party…The man drowned in the Plat river Nebraski", and ends letter with notation…"it's Evry man here for my self anot the devil for the rest", Very Fine, ex-Rohloff.
