Lot 3306

Mexico, 1864, Eagle (2nd Period), 8r red, Guanajuato, cons 148-1864, in combination with 1864, Eagle (3rd Period), 1r ultramarine, Guanajuato, con 217-1864, both tied by circular Guanajuato date stamp (Schatzkes 483) on 1864 folded letter to Mexico, with second strike at top center, Very Fine and rare; 1995 MEPSI certificate.
Scott No. 25a, 22a    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

The high rate (2-2¼ onzas over 45 miles) is explained by the contents (in English) which refer to the enclosure of express letters to be forwarded by the addressee. The sender also refers to having previously sent letters to be forwarded by the French packet, thus illustrating the common practice of not entrusting important or valuable mail to the district post offices.

Realized: $1,350
