A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 10¢ 1869 WITH THIS SCARCE FOREIGN POST OFFICE POSTMARK.
The U.S. Post Office began its operations in Hiogo in 1868, following the establishment of postal services in Yokohama and Nagasaki one year earlier. It continued to function until December 1874. Postal rates during this time were set at 10¢ for mail to the United States, 3¢ or 6¢ for correspondence between Treaty Ports, and additional rates applied for mail sent to Europe.
