Steamer Mary Bess (Red River), blue oval handstamp on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire (seal on flap) from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans, La., entered mails with red "New Orleans, La., Dec 7" cds and "Steam" straightline canceling indicia; small flap flaw, couple light creases, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 853    Estimate $150 - 200.

The "Mary Bess" of 206 tons was built at Louisville in 1852 for Capt. Sam Montgomery and first enrolled at Mobile. Transferred to New Orleans register in 1853 under William Kimball and D.G. Hill's ownership.
