Western Expresses - Wells, Fargo & Co.

Lot 757

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, S. Frco., Dec 6, two strikes of blue cds tying 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) and canceling on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Roseburg, Oregon, with brown allover Simon & Bohm, San Francisco merchant shaded ad and black Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank printed vertically at right over indicia and reading top to bottom, matching boxed "Collect" handstamps one over struck with oval "Paid" handstamp correcting error, manuscript Via Yreka & Jacksonville routing endorsement at top and 1859 docketing at left; entire with opening tear and missing most of bottom flap, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

We know of one other later Simon & Bohm shaded ad usages (different design) with vertical frank at right, however the frank reads from bottom to top. This entire was carried by Wells, Fargo & Co. north to Yreka and handed over to C.C. Beekman for carriage to Jacksonville, Oregon. It is not clear how the entire got from Jacksonville to Roseburg since E.W. Tracy had not extended his express that far south.

Realized: $500
