New Zealand, 1856, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 2d blue on blue paper, Auckland printing, unwatermarked, ample to large margins, tied by barred "10" in oval handstamp on cover to Exeter, England paying the 2d Colonial ship letter rate to N.S.W., reverse with "Wellington, Fe 2, 1857" origin cds and "Exeter, My 9, 1857" receiving cds, manuscript "6" due rating for transit beyond Sydney, Very Fine and choice. Scott No. 5.
SG No. 5    Estimate $400 - 600.

During this cover's transit, the 2d Colonial ship letter rate was replaced by the new fully prepaid rate of 6d per ½ ounce for letter via Australia and Suez to Southampton and London was effective March 27th 1857.
