Hawaii - 1894-99 Republic

Lot 1309

Hawaii, 1899, Statue of Kamehameha I, 5¢ blue, tied by purple "Kealia, Kauai" cds (282.011) on cover to Oroville, Cal., "Honolulu, H.I., Mar 27, 1900" duplex postmark and reverse with S.F. transit and receiving cds, cover corners clipped for disinfection, with lengthy 6-page enclosure with interesting content including harvesting beached whale, natives walking on coals, various native foods, great Honolulu fire and details regarding plague fumigation & quarantine…All our papers and letters smell of fumigation…The quarantine system has been a farce all the way through. Just a money making scheme for the board of health…If a man paid them enough his quarantine was only a name. If he really didn't pay "hush" money, they charged him $23 per day for board and guards, then $25 per Drs. examination and fumigation expenses., Very Fine.
Scott No. 82    Estimate $300 - 400.

Realized: $170
