The area along the Cooper River from near Charleston to present day Moncks Corner by 1800 had many plantations. In order to conduct their business, these planters had a definite need for mail service. Since the U.S. Government did not serve their need very well, they joined together and established a private post. The post was dubbed "St. Johns Post" taking the name from the St. Johns Parish where most of them lived.
