Table of Contents

Cape of Good Hope to Gilbert & Ellice Islands

Lot 114

Gibraltar, 1807 Gibraltar to Somerset, England, datelined letter rated "3/-" and showing a good strike of the curved framed "Gibraltar" handstamp in a mixture of red and black, F.-V.F. and most unusual, ex-G. Osborn.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

About July 1807, the Packet Agent in Gibraltar, Mr. Hardcastle, acquired a red ink pad and switched to this from the black pad for stamping all mail, whether paid or unpaid. Evidently the stamp was not changed and the existing instrument was used uncleaned, with distinct traces of black showing.
